Chicago Cubs infielder Kris Bryant will miss his second straight game on Sunday as he deals with left shoulder soreness.
Bryant, who is batting .280 with nine home runs and 36 RBI this season, says that he’s been dealing with the issue for about a week, and that he tried to play through it.
“I was probably being a little stubborn,” he told media in Cincinnati before Sunday’s game against the Reds. “I feel like there’s a negative to going in the trainer’s room and telling them you’re hurt, but sometimes that’s what you’ve got to do.”
Cubs manager Joe Maddon told media Sunday that he doesn’t expect Bryant to go on the 10-day disabled list, but that there was no sense in rushing the infielder back.
Bryant has been struggling at the plate for the last month, registering just five extra base hits in the month of June. He’s batting just .267 and has an on-base percentage of .333, and has struck out 27 times, including five in his last two games.
The Cubs will hope to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Reds when the two teams tangle on Sunday at Great American Ballpark. After the game, the Cubs will head to Los Angeles for a four-game series against the Dodgers.
