Depending on what neighborhood you live in, your ballot for the Feb. 26 election could ask you about your opinion on topics like rent control and what the city should do with tax revenue from recreational marijuana if it is legalized.
The questions are designed to gauge public opinion on policy issues and do not have any legal force. But they are still a useful tool for elected officials to see how their constituents feel about relevant issues on a hyper-local scale.
Anyone can get a referendum on the ballot in their precinct if they get a petition signed by a number of registered voters equal to 8 percent of the votes cast for governor in any precinct or any ward.
Here are the questions which will be asked on Feb. 26 in each ward:
• In the event that the recreational use and sale of marijuana is legalized in the State of Illinois, should the City of Chicago appropriate tax or other revenues it receives from the sales of marijuana to fund neighborhood reinvestment in low-income disenfranchised communities hit hard by the war on drugs?
