Bungalows on a high!
Chicago’s North Mayfair Neighborhood lands on This Old House magazine’s list of the best “old-house neighborhoods” in the U.S. and Canada.
The article says “like Polish sausage and deep-dish pizza, the Craftsman bungalow is both ubiquitous and beloved in Chicago.”
The magazine selected 51 neighborhoods around the country for the honor. They based the distinction on architectural diversity, the craftsmanship of the homes and the preservation activity in the area.
Many of the homes in North Mayfair date back to the early 1900s, the northwest side neighborhood is known for it’s blocks of tree-lined brick bungalows and mix of old and new residents, many of which are German and Swedish descent.
In 2009 homes in the neighborhood ranged between $106,000-$263,000, according to dreamtown.com, a real estate website that tracks average home prices,.
Part of North Mayfair is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
