Chicago police were searching for multiple people wanted in connection with the shooting of an officer Monday evening in the city's Englewood neighborhood, according to authorities.
The incident was reported at around 7:40 p.m. in the 5600 block of South Shields Avenue after officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle, Interim Chicago Police Supt. Fred Waller said at a news briefing. At some point, an officer-involved shooting occurred and one officer sustained a gunshot wound to the hand, according to authorities. The suspects managed to get away and had yet to be apprehended as of late Monday.
Fellow officers rushed the injured officer to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries late Monday. Waller said he had the chance to talk to both the officer and his parents following the shooting and that the officer was in "good spirits."
As of Monday night, it remained unclear who shot the officer or if law enforcement fired any shots. NBC Chicago also had yet to verify the account of events provided by police.
In the hours following the shooting, the investigation was in its preliminary stages - with authorities initially working on obtaining body camera footage.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, the Chicago Police Department's civilian oversight agency, is investigating the shooting.
