Chicago police say they had no choice but to shoot a man who allegedly fired at them first on Thursday evening.
Authorities said they tried to question two young men near an alley on the 4400 block of South Princeton Avenue but the males ran away.
According to Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden, the incident began after officers saw a man hand something to another man. When police approached, one of the men took off running and officers could see a silver handgun in his hand, Camden said.
"He had a silver handgun in his hands. He fired at the officers. The officers fired back. He's hit in the -- the offender is hit in the leg," Camden said.
Authorities eventually found him hiding behind a building and took him into custody. The other man was found later.
No officers were injured in the incident. Area Central detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority were investigating.
