Multiple shell casings were recovered from the scene, along with a rifle and a handgun, Jerome added.
Two females, ages 22 and 42, were pronounced dead at the scene, Jerome said. Three male children, ages 5, 7 and 8, were also struck by gunfire and transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, Jerome added.
The shooting is believed to have stemmed from a "personal dispute," Jerome said, noting that all victims were believed to be inside the residence when the shooting occurred.
Police did not release further information about the suspects or the vehicles involved.
Deputy Mayor Garien Gatewood and Fifth Ward Alderman Desmon Yancy also spoke at the press conference Thursday.
"This senseless violence has to stop," Yancy said. "Personal conflict and guns has become a bad combination. The summer's just getting started. I don't want to stand in front of another group of microphones and have another discussion about the pain that's caused in our community."
NBC 5's Jenn Schanz reported the scene remained active Thursday morning, with a large police presence setting up a perimeter. Ambulances and police cars were on scene, and officers could be seen going door-to-door gathering evidence.
According to police, an investigation remains ongoing.
