City officials will turn on new streetlights in seven neighborhoods throughout the city this week.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel kicks off the streetlight demonstration Tuesday as part of the Chicago Smart Lighting Project, which aims so bring higher-quality lights to Chicago neighborhoods.
The new lighting system will be tested in several neighborhoods to get feedback from residents before final selections are made.
Under the project, approximately 270,000 outdated streetlights will be replaced with modern, energy-efficient LED lights under the project over the next four years. The new lamps will last two to three times longer than the existing lights, and include a new sensor system that will automatically notify city officials when a street light goes out, eliminating the need to call 311 to report outages.
Residents can submit their feedback by visiting chicagodot.org through Dec. 31.
The demonstration locations include:
- Touhy Ave.: Paulina St. to Ashland Ave. Paulina St.: Touhy Ave. to Chase Ave. Alley from Ashland Ave. to Paulina St. between Touhy Ave. and Chase Ave.
- N. Jersey Ave.: Bryn Mawr Ave. to Hollywood Ave. Hollywood Ave.: N. Jersey Ave. to Spaulding Ave. Alley from Bryn Mawr Ave. to Hollywood Ave. between N. Jersey Ave. and Spaulding Ave.
- Hamlin Ave.: Augusta Blvd. to Iowa St. Augusta Blvd.: Hamlin Ave. to Lawndale Ave. Alley from August Blvd. to Iowa St. between Hamlin Ave. and Ridgeway Ave.
- Wood St.: 46th St. to 47th St. 46th St.: Wood St. to Wolcott Ave. Alley running South from 46th St. between Wood St. and Honore St.
