While Chicago's Fourth of July weekend was marked by a stabbing and unrelated stampede at Navy Pier, at least six people were killed and 63 injured in shootings across the city over the course of the extended holiday weekend.
The most recent fatality occurred Friday at around 7 p.m. in the 300 block of N. Laramie when, according to police, two victims were standing on a sidewalk when two other individuals approached them and began firing shots and fleeing the scene in a grey sedan. Officials said a 40-year-old man was transported to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and later pronounced dead. The second 65-year-old victim was taken to the same hospital in critical condition after receiving gunshot wounds to the head, face and right arm; at the moment no one in connection the incident is in custody.
Early Friday in the Austin neighborhood, a 37-year-old man and 32-year-old woman were fighting in a group of people in the 900 block of North Lavergne, police said. A man fired shots at about 2:47 a.m., fatally striking the 37-year-old in the chest and the 32-year-old woman in the arm.
Minutes later, at about 2:55 a.m. in Fuller Park, a man approached an 18-year-old woman in the street in the 4200 Block of South Wells and shot her once in the head. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The rest of the weekend's shootings, according to police, occurred as follows:
SUNDAY, JULY 7
--A 28-year-old man told officers that at around 10:50 p.m. he was standing on the sidewalk in the 5000 block of West Gladys when he heard shots and felt pain, according to police. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.
--At approximately 5:53 p.m. in the 300 block of South St. Louis, a 23-year-old man was walking to his car when an unknown person in a black vehicle fired shots, striking him in the right arm and buttocks, police said. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.
--A 36-year-old man was driving in the 1600 block of North Narragansett at approximately 2:30 p.m. when he heard shots, police said. The man got out of his car and entered a store to seek help, and was taken to Loyola Hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his chest.
-- In the 800 block of North Harding at approximately 11:48 a.m., a 25-year-old man met with a 32-year-old man at his residence. An altercation took place, and the 32-year-old fired shots at the victim, striking him in the gun, neck, and thigh. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, and the 32-year-old was arrested by police.
--At approximately 9 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Newport, a 24-year-old man was standing on a corner when two men got out of a black Jeep and fired shots, grazing his left ear. He was taken to Community First Hospital in good condition, police said.
--Two men were shot in the 5142 block of W. Fulton around 8:06 a.m. A 41-year-old was shot in the lower back and torso, while the 51-year-old was shot in the buttocks. Both were transported to nearby hospitals in stable condition after they said the incident occurred after they were standing outside of a vehicle when an unknown offender approached them and fired shots at them.
--Four victims were shot around 3:43 a.m. in the 5600 block of S. Paulina. A 31-year-old was taken to the University of Chicago in critical condition after being shot in the leg; along with a 21-year-old woman who was taken to St. Bernard's in stable condition after being shot in her right foot; a 32-year-old woman was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition after being wounded in her left leg; and a 22-year-old woman was also taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition after being shot in the back.
--A 28-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when a man approached on foot and fired shots. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition after being shot in the back in the 1500 block of S. Homan around 2:15 a.m.
--In the 600 block of W. 61st Place, four people were shot around 1:10 a.m. A man, 25, was shot in his right buttocks and the back; a 37-year-old man was shot in his legs; a 27-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and arm pit; and a woman, 25, sustained a graze wound to the buttocks. The victims reported that they were outside when shots were fired striking the victims. the 27-year-old attempted to drive to the hospital in a silver Chrysler 300 that crashed at Union and 61st Pl. Police said the victims did not provide offender description.
--At around 1:04 a.m. in the 9100 block of S. Luella, a 14-year-old woman was sitting in a parked car when a man began firing shots from a gangway. The victim was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital by a relative in stable condition after recieving a gunshot wound to her left foot.
SATURDAY, JULY 6
--In the 5300 block of S. Hoyne, at about 11:40 p.m., two victims were standing on the front porch of a residence when they heard shots and felt pain. A 34-year-old man was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition with a wounded left elbow and the other 24-year-old man was taken to the same hospital, also in stable condition with a gunshow wound to his left leg.
--Another shooting occurred in the 300 block of W. 63rd St. around 9 p.m. when a 53-year-old man was walking on a sidewalk and another man approached, announcing a robbery. The victim was wounded in his left hand during the robbery and was treated and later released from St. Bernard's.
--Around 9:11 p.m. in the 4600 block of S. King Dr., a 30-year-old woman, a 46-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were involved in an altercation with two other unknown men. One of those men had a handgun and fired shots at the victims. The 30-year-old woman was struck in her left arm, the 46-year-old was struck in her right foot and the man was struck in his left arm. All victims were transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.
Local
--A 35-year-old received a gunshot wound to the left thigh in the 300 block of W. 64th St. He was transported to St. bernard Hospital in good condition but authorities say the victim is uncooperative with police and will not disclose information to them.
--A 44-year-old man who says he was inside his house laying in bed when he heard multiple shots and felt pain in the back of the neck, was also wounded in the back of his head and torso. The incident took place in the 2200 block of E. 93rd St. at around 8:22 p.m. The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition.
--Just after 4 p.m. in the 400 block of West Division, a 22-year-old man was shot in the lower back by an unknown gunman, police said. The man was taken to Northwestern Medical Center in stable condition.
--In the 100 block of West 89th Street at approximately 3 p.m., a 37-year-old man was getting out of his vehicle when two men attempted to steal the car. One of the men opened fire, striking the victim in the right shoulder. He was taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition, police said.
--A 33-year-old man received a gunshot wound to the stomach and back and was transported to Mount Sinai in critical condition, while another victim, a 32-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the groin and was also later transported to the same hospital in stable condition. Police say the victims were standing outside of a vehicle in the 3400 block of W. Fullerton at around 5 a.m., when an unknown group of individuals began to argue and that when the victims heard shots and felt pain.
-- A 32-year-old man was walking on a sidewalk in the 6200 block of W. Fullerton when an occupant in an SUV fired shots. The victim was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in stable condition.
--At about 1:43 a.m. in the 3300 block of W. Maypole, two victims were shot. A 32-year-old man transported himself to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the jaw, chest, abdomen and legl was listed in stable condition. Meanwhoile a 25-year-old man who also a walk-in at Stroger Hospital remains in good condition after being shot in the foot. The victims reported that they were on the sidewalk when a vehicle drove by and fired shots, stricking them.
FRIDAY, JULY 5
--At around 7 p.m. in the 300 block of N. Laramie two victims were standing on a sidewalk when two other individuals approached them and began firing shots and fleeing the scene in a grey sedan. Officials said a 40-year-old man was transported to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and later pronounced dead. A 65-year-old victim was taken to the same hospital in critical condition after receiving gunshot wounds to the head, face and right arm.
--A 26-year-old man was standing outside a friend’s house at about 5:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of West Franklin when he was shot in the left shoulder area, police said. The victim’s girlfriend had just arrived to the scene and drove him to the hospital.
--At about 4:45 a.m., a 46-year-old man was discovered unresponsive near a residence in the 6100 block of South Eberhart with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, police said. The male was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
--A 20-year-old man was in a vehicle at about 4 a.m. in the 2900 block of West Augusta when someone in an unknown vehicle drove by and fired shots, police said. He was shot once to the thigh and listed in stable condition.
--A 34-year-old man was standing next to a parked vehicle at about 2:55 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Rice when someone inside a gray vehicle fired shots, grazing his hip, police said. The man refused medical treatment.
--A 37-year-old man and 32-year-old woman were involved in a fight within a group of people at about 2:47 a.m. in the 900 block of North Lavergne when a man fired shots, striking them both, police said. The 37-year-old man was shot in the chest and killed, and the 32-year-old woman was shot twice in the arm.
--An 18-year-old woman fatally shot in the head about at about 2:55 a.m., police said. She was in the street in the 4200 block of South Wells when a man approached her and shot her onuce in the head. She pronounced dead at the scene.
--Multiple people were shot at about 2:08 a.m. in the 1600 block of East 67th Street, police said. An 18-year-old woman was shot in the chest and arm, a 33-year-old man was shot twice in the back, an 18-year-old man was shot in the left leg and chest, a 20-year-old woman was shot in the ankle, and a 26-year-old man was shot in the leg. No other details were immediately available as police investigated.
--A 29-year-old man was standing next to a vehicle at about 1:43 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Wood when a man fired shots from a nearby alley, striking the man multiple times in the chest, police said. He was listed in critical condition.
--A 26-year-old man and 33-year-old man were in a "verbal dispute" with another man who produced a handgun and fired shots at the victims. The 26-year-old was struck in the leg. The 33-year-old man was struck in the left leg. The shooting took place at about 1:06 a.m. in 6400 block of South Parnell.
--A 33-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and leg at about 12:52 a.m. in the 3000 block of North Davlin, police said. Witnesses told police the victim may also be an offender as they saw him leaving his vehicle in an alley and shooting at a group of people a few houses down. He did not strike anyone, police said, but it appears someone in the group returned fire, striking him.
--Two men, ages 22 and 29, were standing on the sidewalk at about 12:45 a.m. in 7200 block of South Oakley when they were struck by unknown gunfire, police said. The 22-year-old was struck in the right ankle and the 29-year-old was struck in the left foot. Both victims drove themselves to the hospital in stable condition.
THURSDAY, JULY 4
--A 23-year-old man and 27-year-old man were both shot at about 11:20 p.m. while standing on the sidewalk in 3000 block of West Franklin, police said. The 23-year-old was struck in the neck, shoulder, elbow and forearm and sustained a graze wound to his knee. He was listed in stable condition. The 27-year-old was struck in the ankle and listed in stable condition.
--A 34-year-old man told paramedics he was walking in an alley at about 11:20 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Shore Drive when he realized he had been shot in the leg, police said. No other details about the shooting were immediately available. He was listed in critical condition.
--A 41-year-old man was struck in the leg at about 11:11 p.m. while standing in front of a residence in the 12000 block of South Harvard, police said. A man emerged from the back of the home and fired shots, police said. The victim was listed in good condition.
--An 18-year-old woman was in the backyard of a residence in the 7600 block of South Lowe when she was hit in the back by a gunshot, police said. The woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she's listed in stable condition.
--In the 4000 block of South Maplewood at approximately 8:55 p.m., a 21-year-old man was hit by gunfire, police said. He is listed in serious condition at Mount Sinai, but is not cooperating with police.
--Just after 8 p.m. in the 3700 block of North Milwaukee, a 28-year-old man was walking when a black sedan approached and a person inside opened fire, striking the man in the hand. He was taken to Community First Hospital in good condition, police said.
--Two people, including an innocent bystander, were shot on the city's South Side at approximately 4 p.m. in the 2800 block of East 77th Street, police said. A 21-year-old man got into a verbal altercation with a group of men, and one person opened fire, striking him in the back. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition, and a 39-year-old woman, who was walking by the scene at the time of the shooting, was hit in both legs, and is also in serious condition at the same hospital.
--Four men were shot, one fatally, at 11:35 a.m. Thursday while standing outside in the 3100 block of West Iowa Street, police said. A light-colored sedan drove by, and its occupants began firing gun shots. A 31-year-old man sustained two gunshot wounds to the leg and is in stable condition. A 23-year-old man was shot in the right leg and is in stable condition. A 17-year-old man was shot in the body and remained in unknown condition. A 32-year-old man was shot in the body and died at the scene.
--A 16-year-old boy was shot in the arm Thursday while traveling in the backseat of a vehicle in the 12000 block of South Emerald, police said. At about 1:10 a.m., an unknown man approached the car on foot and fired a shot, striking the boy. The driver of the car took him to Roseland Hospital where he was treated and released in good condition.
--A 35-year-old woman was found dead early Thursday inside a residence in the 4300 block of West Wilcox with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. She was inside the residence at about 1:30 a.m. drinking with a "known male," police said, when "at some point a gun was displayed, possibly by the victim." During the struggle over the weapon, it discharged and struck her in the head. The man was being questioned by police.
--A 37-year-old man was shot in the arm Thursday while standing outside a vehicle in the 5000 block of South Justine at about 12:20 a.m., police said. The victim told police he didn't see the offender or know where the shots came from. He was driven to University of Chicago Hospital by a friend and was listed in good condition and the offender.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 3
--A 31-year-old man sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head at about 5:04 p.m. Wednesday in the 6900 block of South Lafayette, police said. He was on the phone, police said, when an unknown person walked up and fired shots at the victim. The gunman fled in a black vehicle westbound on 69th Street.
