Community Rallies to Save Catholic School

A group of parents and staff is not taking a directive to close Our Lady of Victory Elementary School laying down.

The Portage Park school is one of at least six schools the Archdiocese of Chicago is slated to close for budgetary reasons.

Hundreds of parents, students and school officials met Friday night to come up with a plan to raise the $400,000 needed to save the school.

"We do have a plan our principal will discuss with the Archdiocese. We have until the end of the month, and I think you'll be very surprised that we're gonna do it," director of religious education Mary Beth Frystak said after the closed door meeting. "There is going to be a miracle here. This school is not going away."

School officials say they've received numerous pledges and donations.

Other schools slated to close include St. Florian School in Chicago, St. Bernadette School in Elmwood Park, Santa Maria Del Popolo in Mundelein and St. Christopher in Midlothian.
