Cook County Considers Jail Visits By Video Link

Technology may make it possible for family and friends to visit Cook County Jail inmates remotely

Technology may make it possible for family and friends to visit Cook County Jail inmates remotely.

The Cook County sheriff's office said Tuesday it is exploring the possibility of adding video-conference visits. Sheriff's officials say that would be an additional option for visitors, adding that face-to-face, in-person visits would not be eliminated.

The sheriff's office says the idea could decrease travel costs for families and increase inmates' communication with loved ones. It could make it easier for children, elderly and disabled people to visit jail inmates. The idea could reduce overtime costs for the jail.

The sheriff's office is asking friends and family of current and former Cook County Jail inmates to participate in a telephone survey about the idea. The toll-free phone number for the survey is 855-849-6521.
