A man was wounded in a shootout with Chicago police Saturday morning in the city's West Ridge neighborhood that occurred while officers were responding to a previous shooting, according to authorities.
Police said officers responded to the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue shortly after 9:30 a.m. for a previous shooting, in which a 39-year-old man was wounded while walking along the street. A gunman emerged from behind and shot the victim in the shoulder, said Chicago Police Deputy Chief Kevin Bruno.
After police officers and fire personnel responded to the area, the possible suspect in the previous shooting came out of an alley and began firing at officers and paramedics, police stated. The suspect emerged from "various locations" over the following two and a half minutes and exchanged gunshots with Chicago police officers, authorities said.
Then, in the 6800 block of North Washtenaw, the suspect was shot multiple times by officers, Bruno said. The suspect was taken to Ascension Saint Francis Hospital in critical condition, police said.
The man wounded in the initial shooting was taken to the hospital, but had been treated and released as of Saturday afternoon.
No officers were struck by gunfire, according to authorities. A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.
Chicago's Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed an officer was involved in the shooting and are investigating.
