Firefighters were battling a massive fire at a scrapyard in Joliet on Friday afternoon.

The fire was reported before 2:15 p.m. at BL Duke's Joliet Public Scrap Metal Recycling Yard near Illinois Routes 7 and 53. According to the Lockport Township Fire Department, crews arrived to an "exceptionally large scrap pile" - that consisted mainly of recycling materials.

Footage captured by NBC Chicago's Sky 5 helicopter showed large plumes of smoke filling the sky as first responders worked to extinguish the flames. As of around 6 p.m., multiple fire departments were working together to bring the fire under control, officials said.

Tanker trunks from nearby fire departments were summoned to bring in water as the area has a limited number of fire hydrants.
