The Chicago Cubs continued their flurry of trade deadline day moves, sending relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. to the San Diego Padres.
ESPN Chicago's Jesse Rogers was the first to report the trade, which took place just before the MLB trade deadline on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cubs also sent international bonus money to the Padres in the deal, the team said in a press release.
In exchange, the Cubs received relief pitcher Brad Wieck from the Padres. The 6-foot-9 Wieck has had struggles of his own this season at the big league level, with a 6.57 ERA in 30 appearances. He does have 31 strikeouts in 24.2 innings of work.
Edwards was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on July 22 after being activated from the injured list. The reliever has made 20 appearances with the big league club this season, with a 1-1 record and a 5.87 ERA in those games.
Edwards struggled early with his command after MLB ruled that an adjustment he made to his pitching delivery was illegal, and the Cubs sent him down to the minors to work on a fix for the issue. He was recalled again earlier this season, but an injury landed him on the injury list.
The hurler walked nine batters in 15 innings while striking out 17 at the big league level.

The Cubs made several other moves on Wednesday, acquiring outfielder Nick Castellanos from the Detroit Tigers and utilityman Tony Kemp from the Houston Astros.
