Wade Miley is set to make a rehab start with the Single-A South Bend Cubs on Friday, an outing that could have implications for Tuesday’s trade deadline.
Miley has been on the injured list for most of the last two months with a shoulder issue. He missed about three weeks before returning for a start June 10 against the Yankees, which he exited after three innings.
If he comes out of the outing healthy, he could generate interest from teams seeking starting pitching help at the deadline. He threw 28 pitches in a live batting practice session Monday.
Miley, whom the Cubs claimed off waivers from the Reds last winter, has been limited to four starts this season due to injuries.
He started the season on the IL with elbow inflammation and didn’t make his season debut until May 10 — following his slow buildup in spring training in the aftermath of MLB’s lockout.

The lefty has been effective when healthy, sporting a 2.84 ERA in his four starts (19 innings), and has a good track record as a 12-year veteran.
Miley, who threw consecutive quality starts in May — including seven shutout innings in his second outing of the season — posted a 3.37 ERA in 28 starts last year and made five postseason appearances (four starts) from 2018-19.
