‘Dangerous' Inmate Caught After Escape From Indiana State Prison: Police

Travis Hornett, 39, surrendered to police after he was surrounded in a "vacant home he had forcibly entered as part of his effort to evade capture," police said

A "dangerous" inmate who escaped the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City this week has been captured, according to authorities.

Travis Hornett, 39, surrendered to police shortly after midnight Thursday as he was surrounded by police in a "vacant home he had forcibly entered as part of his effort to evade capture," Indiana State Police said.

Authorities said Hornett had on him a backpack, which he "acquired by unknown means while he was fleeing." Police believe the backpack came from a local beach in the area and were searching for the owner.

Anyone who may be missing a backpack was being asked to call Detective Mike Bailey at (219) 690-0039.

Hornett and responding officers were not injured in the incident, but police said Hornett is expected to face new felony charges in connection with his escape and alleged break-in.

Hornett, who police said was "considered dangerous," allegedly fled from a work detail around 11:10 a.m. on prison grounds and was believed to still be in the area, the Michigan City Police Department said. He was weatring khaki clothes when he fled but it was unclear if he would still be wearing them outside of the prison.

According to the Indiana Department of Corrections, Hornett was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a burglary charge in 2006. He was released in 2015 but arrested again for burglary in 2018 and was sentenced to another five years in prison in September. His projected release date was May 30, 2021, according to the department.
