A 56-year-old man was found dead with numerous bite wounds at his daughter's home in Washington Heights Sunday night.
Johnny Wilson was living in the family room at his daughter's home along with four pit bull dogs and two puppies. She is said to have been breeding the animals.
Authorities believe Wilson was mauled and killed by the dogs.
An autopsy Monday revealed Wilson died of a hemorrhage from multiple injuries from an attack by dogs and his death was ruled accidental, the medical examiner's office said. Both of his ears had been bitten off and at least one of his eyes was mauled.
"I saw the three dogs in the yard," said neighbor Keith Harper. "They looked like they were playing with each other, that was it. I never seen them to be violent, so when I found out this morning, I was just shocked."
Wilson's daughter told investigators that the dogs were afraid of her father because he had a loud voice, the Chicago Tribune reports.
No charges have been filed, and there was no evidence that dog-fighting had taken place in the home.
"There were only four I knew of. They were very manageable dogs," said neighbor Avantis Smith. "I would've never looked at them and thought they would attack someone because she had them under control."
The animals were handed over to Chicago Animal Care and Control, police officials said, and they'll likely be destroyed.
