Mayor Rahm Emanuel has appointed Deborah Quazzo to replace Penny Pritzker on the Chicago School Board.
Quazzo is described as a financial whiz. She also donated $5,000 to the Emanuel mayoral campaign in 2011.
Quazzo’s own children did not attend Chicago Public Schools. They are graduates of the prestigious private Latin school.
"Deborah has been a strong advocate for students throughout her career and personal life," the mayor said in a press release that also noted she "brings a valuable perspective."
Quazzo’s long investment banking career includes promoting education related businesses. The mayor’s office notes she has sat on boards that tackle truancy, teacher training and school curriculum.
Also, Quazzo’s interest in politics extends to a recent $1,000 contribution to the Citizens for Rauner campaign. Rauner is a Republican candidate for governor. As well, Quazzo’s husband, Stephen Quazzo, has worked closely over the years with real estate billionaire Sam Zell.
The Chicago Teachers Union reacted to the Quazzo appointment, saying "once again, this is a missed opportunity to include a compassionate voice that will fight for equitable education."
