Auction of Ex-Dixon Comptroller's Property Nets $4M

The U.S. Marshals Service says a two-day auction of property owned by indicted former Dixon Comptroller Rita Crundwell raised about $4.78 million.

Crundwell is accused of misappropriating more than $53 million from Dixon to support a lavish lifestyle and her nationally renowned horse breeding operation. She's pleaded not guilty to a federal charge and also faces state charges.

On Sunday, auctioneers at her northern Illinois ranch sold off 146 horses and related items for about $2.4 million. That included a $775,000 bid for a champion stallion named Good I Will Be.

The auction wrapped up Monday with the sale of more horses, tack, vehicles and trailers.

If Crundwell is convicted, the U.S. Marshal's Service and Dixon will get the money. If she's acquitted, the profits will be returned to her.
