Oprah Winfrey's stamp of approval can be all it takes to launch a person to superstardom -- just ask Dr. Oz or Dr. Phil.
Now it's Chicago sex therapist Dr. Laura Berman's turn.
"In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman" launched Monday night on the Oprah Winfrey Network. The show provides an inside look at real couple's intimacy issues.
Berman visits the couples in their homes in cities all over the Midwest, and then the couples come to Chicago for sessions at her Michigan Avenue office.
"It's very real, it's based on the premise of what I do in my actual clinical practice when people come for intensive retreats. So the challenge is that I have three days to turn this relationship around and get it back on the right track," Berman says.
And the show doesn't pull any punches when it comes to dealing with such sensitive material. In other words, it's definitely for adults, with the storyline in the premier episode dealing with a wife who can only climax with the aid of a laundry basket.
"That's just who I am. I believe wholeheartedly that sex is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of or embarrassed of," Berman says. "Part of my agenda is to really let go of that shame, so I don't believe in pet names or innuendos. I just say it like it is -- this is your elbow, this is your vulva."
Not only does the show carry Oprah's stamp of approval, the Queen of Talk's fingerprints are all over it.
"The title was her idea, it was her idea to go into people's homes and into their bedrooms and see what's really going on in people's lives," Berman says. "She was really involved in the inception of the idea of the show and the development of it from the beginning."
"In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman" airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. on OWN.
