While his professional life is still riding high fresh off a Stanley Cup win, Duncan Keith’s personal life has taken another route.
In June the 32-year-old defenseman opened up about separating from his wife Kelly-Rae, telling the Chicago Tribune, “I’m not going to lie: it has been a long year and extremely difficult.”
The two decided to part ways a year prior, in June 2014, after being together since they were teenagers and sharing one child, their 2-year-old son Colton. Keith told the newspaper the two were doing their best to co-parent and raise their son in a loving environment.
He also addressed rumors that had swirled about his former wife and longtime teammate Patrick Sharp, telling the Tribune “that was all a complete fabrication,” and that his divorce “had nothing to do with anything except what was between me and Kelly-Rae.”
This week, the Supreme Court of British Columbia shot down an interim bid by Keith's estranged wife that asked for $150,000 a month in spousal support, the Vancouver Sun reported. One justice called the sum “disproportionately high, at least in this interim stage,” according to the newspaper.
Kelly Keith said the breakdown of the marriage caused her “economic hardships and disadvantages,” according to the Vancouver Sun.
She also requested $69,270 a month in child support to cover the cost of their son. Keith argued he already paid her $10,000 a month to cover her mortgage and other expenses.
The court ordered Keith to pay Kelly Keith $15,000 a month to help support their son as well as $45,000 in spousal support.
“There is no evidence of Ms. Keith having any financial need that is unmet, or of blameworthy conduct on Mr. Keith’s part,” the judge ruled, according to the Vancouver Sun.
The Chicago Blackhawks reportedly pay Keith an average annual salary of $5.3 million a year. In total, he's slated to earn roughly $7.5 million this season.
