“Mummies” on Display Next Month

Part of the Feild Musuem's collection feature's the world's oldest mummy.

More than 20 mummies from Egypt and Peru that are in The Field Museum's collection will go on display next month, many for the first time since the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.

Many of the mummies will be displayed in their original 19th century cases. Some are date to 5,500 years old. Museum scientists performed non-invasive scans on several mummies last year. The mummies will be shown along with the detailed scanned images. Visitors will be able to see evidence of serious injuries, illnesses and any offerings or jewelry inside in the wrappings.

The Field Museum exhibit "Opening the Vaults: Mummies" runs for just two months because of the fragile nature of the mummies. It opens Feb. 17 and runs through April 22.
