Chicago's Field Museum unwrapped its latest exhibit - a rare showcase of mummies from its own collection.
More than 20 mummies from Egypt and Peru will be on display from Feb. 17 through April 22 in the exhibit, “Opening the Vaults: Mummies."
Some mummies have not been seen by the public in more than a century. The museum obtained many of the mummies at the Columbian Exposition in 1893, but they hadn't been studied thoroughly until last year because of fears of damage.
Scientists at the lakefront facility performed non-invasive CT scans on several mummies, allowing them to "virtually unwrap" them.
In January, the National Archaeology Museum of Lisbon discovered their 2,250-year-old mummy died from prostate cancer caused by genetics.
