Seven Chicago firefighters suffered injuries battling an extra-alarm apartment fire in Rogers Park Monday morning.
Just before 6 a.m., flames began spreading through a three-story apartment building in the 1700 block of West Estes Avenue on the city’s North Side. The blaze was soon escalated to a 2-11 alarm, drawing more than 200 firefighters to the scene.
Firefighters fought the flames just as the first subzero temperatures of the season swept through the Chicago area, with bitter cold temps barely hovering around zero degrees and whipping wind chill dropping as low as 15-below. [[364849091, C]]
The injuries were minor, fire officials said, many of which stemmed from slips and falls in the icy conditions. Details on what sparked the fire have not yet been released.
