Chicago first and only female mayor is ailing.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Jane Byrne was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital Monday via ambulance and is suffering from multiple ailments. The newspaper reports the 79-year-old also had a stroke in January.
Byrne's condition was not available.
Byrne served as mayor from 1979-1983 before losing the Democratic primary to Harold Washington, who went on to become the city's first black mayor.
