In his second go-around in challenging incumbent Maria Berrios for state representative in Illinois’ 39th District, Will Guzzardi has picked up what his campaign sees as a critical endorsement: The Chicago Teachers Union.
In a statement, Guzzardi said The Chicago Teachers Union’s endorsement comes with an investment of financial resources and organizing infrastructure. As well, the campaign plans to hold an “Educators for Guzzardi” canvass, where dozens of teachers and parents will walk the 39th District talking to voters.
The CTU backing follows earlier endorsements of a number of progressive aldermen with wards in the district, including Alds. Moreno (1), Waugespack (32) and Arena (45).
“We’re extremely proud to have earned the support of the CTU,” Guzzardi told Ward Room. “Issues of public education are important to every family in my district. I hear concerns about our schools every day when I talk to voters, and I think this endorsement sends a clear message that our campaign will put the needs of our students and our schools and our teachers first.”
Guzzardi, 26, is gearing up for a 2014 rematch with incumbent Toni Berrios, to whom he lost by a margin of 125 votes in 2012.
