All regulary scheduled Chicago Public Schools summer classes and sports classes are canceled Friday because of the ongoing heat wave.
CPS Chief Executive Officer Jean-Claude Brizard canceled classes for students and teachers but said school leaders and engineers are expected to report to work.
“Due to reports of the excessive heat that will continue throughout Chicago again [Friday], we have determined that it is in the best interest of our students and instructional staff to cancel summer school for all CPS sponsored sites tomorrow,” said CEO Brizard.
Friday will be the second day in a row that classes were canceled. High temperatures forced CPS officials to cancel Thursday classes at 21 schools without air conditioning.
Two Chicago-area deaths have been attributed to the heat wave.
