Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton appeared at a series of fundraisers in Chicago Monday, including a meeting with the mothers of gun violence just hours before a 9-year-old boy was gunned down and killed after school. NBC 5’s Mary Ann Ahern reports.

Chicago police are hunting for the person who gunned down and killed an innocent young boy Monday afternoon, a horrific murder that has even caught the attention of Hillary Clinton.

The Democratic presidential candidate, a Chicago-area native, was in town for a series of fundraising events when news start circulating about the boy’s heartbreaking death.

“While in Chicago discussing the way forward, another child dies from gun violence just miles away,” Clinton wrote to more than 4 million Twitter followers Monday evening. “Devastating.”

It was around 4:15 p.m. when the fourth-grader was shot in the head and back with multiple rounds of bullets near the intersection of 80th Street and Damen Avenue in the city’s Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

The child's parents told Father Michael Pfleger that he was still wearing his school uniform at the time of his death.

Chief of Detectives Constantine "Dean" Andrews said at a Monday night press conference that an unknown number of individuals were in the alley where the boy’s body was found prior to the shooting. After the deadly shooting, they fled the scene. Police officers were canvassing the neighborhood and asking for surveillance footage.

The boy attended school at Scott Joplin School, where his teachers say he was a delight.
