Lines were getting longer by the minute at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport early Wednesday as travelers began to head home after Christmas.
This holiday season was a busy one for travel, with AAA reporting that more than one in three Americans chose to travel - the most on record.
Wednesday was expected to be the busiest air travel day of the holiday season, according to AAA.
The Chicago Department of Aviation said that based on ticket information, more than 5.7 million passengers were estimated to be traveling through the city's O'Hare and Midway airports by Jan. 3, a number higher than last year's holiday season.
Travelers taking to the sky should remember to arrive at the airport two hours in advance for domestic flights and three hours ahead of time for international flights.
Lower gas prices have impacted travel as well, with the average gas price in Chicago at around $2.36. That's compared to $2.70 per gallon for gas at the same time last year, likely causing more holiday revelers to hit the road.
