15-Year-Old Girl Shot and Killed While Sitting on Porch of Chicago Home

A 15-year-old girl with a bright future was gunned down Tuesday, and now her family is in mourning of a life lost too soon. NBC 5’s Michelle Relerford has more.

A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed Tuesday night while sitting on a front porch on Chicago's South Side, according to police.

Jazmyne Jeter was sitting with a group of teenagers on the porch of a home in the 6900 block of South Carpenter Street in Englewood at around 8:30 p.m. when a vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire, authorities said.

Jeter, of the 8100 block of South Burnham Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood, was shot in the chest, officials said. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 9:21 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Authorities originally said the shots may have come from the gangway, but Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson later said at a news conference that the shooter was believed to have been inside a vehicle driving by the porch.

Investigators did not believe that Jeter was the intended target of the shooting, Johnson said, but he added that police "do know that the group she was with returned fire."

Jeter was a freshman at ACE Technical Charter High School who was "very athletic," her mother Desiree Jeter said, adding that her daughter loved basketball and dance.

Desiree Jeter said she and her family used to live in the area where her daughter was shot, and Jazmyne Jeter was with her older sister, visiting friends in their old neighborhood at the time.

The girls were about to leave and head home when shots rang out, Desiree Jeter said, revealing that her older daughter watched her younger sister die.

Students at ACE Technical High School were in mourning on Wednesday, grieving their classmate's death by writing thoughts and messages on posters throughout the school.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting, according to police, who continue to investigate.

Jazmyne Jeter was one of at least 16 people, including three teenagers, shot across the city of Chicago on Tuesday, authorities said.
