News of the death of an 83-year-old man who authorities said was shot five times in his home rocked the usually quiet area of unincorporated Lake County, Ind., near Dyer on Thursday.
Julius Boros was found dead a day earlier by a family member who came to check on him. The house had been ransacked, neighbors said.
"There's a little panic amongst some of the homeowners and we're trying to keep the lid on it, more or less, and not create problems or panic for people," said Boros' friend, Barb Hoffstedt.
Boros, friends said, had lost his wife a few years ago. One neighbor said he made a point to visit the man once a week for lunch.
"Thursdays was our day, and I hadn't seen him since the previous Thursday, but supposedly the family member saw him on Saturday. So between Saturday and when they found him on Wednesday, that was it," said Jim Saborski.
Family members declined to speak on record, but friends who knew Boros said he lived a simple life in the Aspen Trail subdivision after owning a Chicago-area gas station. They openly wondered why someone would kill the man.
