A man who was armed with two knives was shot and killed by police in suburban North Riverside on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
According to law enforcement, at 3:47 p.m., officers with the North Riverside Police Department responded to an emergency call regarding a disturbance in the 8500 block of North Cermak. North Riverside police said officers encountered a situation involving a 31-year-old man from Crest Hill, and an officer "discharged their fire in defense of another individual."
NBC Chicago has yet to independently verify the account of events provided by police.
The man, who was identified by family as Jose Evans, was later pronounced dead from his injuries. The officers who responded were equipped with body cameras at the time of the shooting, officials said.
Police said what occurred was an "isolated domestic incident," and there was no threat to the public.
Relatives of Evans said he had recent struggles with mental health issues and substance abuse. Family members told NBC Chicago they were disappointed and wish there were more resources available to help him on Sunday.
"It’s a sad situation, and it’s stuff like this that goes on every day in life," Theresa Evans, the individual's sister said. "I’m disappointed by the system. My brother will rest in peace, and we’ll get to the bottom of it.”
The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Taskforce is conducting an investigation into the incident.
