Investigators say the deputy was blocking the inside lane of traffic to allow a tow truck operator to remove the car in the ditch. The deputy’s emergency lights were activated.

Both the deputy and the man driving the Toyota were taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in suburban Barrington and treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to investigators.

Gaitano W. Lombardo, 20, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, and for having no insurance, according to the sheriff’s office.
