Michigan City Police sent out a community alert warning of a new street drug that emerged over Spring Break in Indiana.
The drug is known as 25-I, N-Bomb, 25I-NBOMe or Smiles.
Police say the drug is an extremely potent synthetic substance that acts as a hallucinogen and is similar to LSD and ecstasy.
The new drug comes in the form of a white powder and is snorted or smoked, but is also sold in liquid form mixed with alcohol or energy drinks.
Louisiana health officials invoked an emergency ban on the substance in 2012 after a music festival attendee died after reportedly taking one drop of the liquified drug.
The drug is said to cause blurred vision, increased breathing rate and distorted sensory processing, along with euphoria, hallucinations, confusion, anxiety, agitation, paranoia and feelings of panic, depression and violent episodes.
Police say the substance is often bought online from China.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the drug has been linked to 19 deaths of people aged 15-29.
