A total of eight people were shot, three fatally, on Monday afternoon in the Gage Park neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest Side, authorities said.
Officers responded to a call of a person shot at around 2:10 p.m. in the 3500 block of West 59th Street, said Chicago Police Department Chief of Patrol John Hein. Authorities determined eight people, four men and four women, had been shot, authorities said.
Six victims were located at the scene and transported to area hospitals, while two individuals self-transported to the hospital. Three of the men who were shot died from their injuries, Chicago police said.
The eight victims range in age between 20 and 35 years old.
Chicago police said the shooting occurred during a "social gathering," but specifics regarding what let up to the shooting weren't clear. Information on potential suspects wasn't available in the hours immediately following the shooting.
As of around 5 p.m., detectives were in the process of interviewing witnesses as they worked to find the suspects.
"We're going to solve this crime and find the individuals responsible for this heinous terrible incident," Hein said.
