McCarthy: CPD Computers Haven't Been Hacked

"There's no indication that anything has happened. There's no information that anything is going to happen," says Garry McCarthy

Chicago's police superintendent said Thursday there's no truth to reports that the department's computer systems were hit by a virus.

"The fact is we have taken steps to ensure that we have redundant systems and backup systems," Supt. Garry McCarthy said at a press event outside police headquarters.

A post on the Second City Cop website early Thursday morning said staff were being met with "virus warning" alerts while trying to complete their work.

"The entire Department Intranet is in danger of a meltdown on an unimaginable scale, just in time for a potential "mass arrest" situation this weekend that would bring the Department to a grinding halt," read the anonymous post.

But McCarthy implied the warnings were the result of the additional security measures taken by the department's IT staff.

"Naturally we have technical difficulties all the time, as everybody else does," he said. "There's no indication that anything has happened. There's no information that anything is going to happen."
