New Dolphin Calf Makes Public Debut

Male Calf Was Born on Memorial Day

If you’re looking for a way to keep cool this week, swing by the Shedd Aquarium to meet the new, 3-week-old Pacific white-sided dolphin calf.

The male calf making his public debut Monday was born to mom Piquet on Memorial Day.

“Demonstrating his curiosity and youthful energy, the calf has also begun to mimic Piquet as she swims upside down,” said Ken Ramirez, executive vice president of animal care and training at the Shedd. “He hasn’t quite mastered it yet but is certainly trying very hard.”

According to officials, it didn't take long after the birth for the calf to begin bonding with its mother. it reportedly swam to the surface and took a breath right after the birth, and then began swimming around with her.

Perhaps his biggest accomplishment so far, the calf has managed to match up his sleep schedule with his mother’s.

There are fewer than 20 Pacific white-sided dolphins in North American facilities.
