Indiana Unveils New License Plate Design

Indiana’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced Thursday a new license plate for the state’s bicentennial.

The plate, featuring a covered bridge, was selected after a month-long contest that started in August. According to the BMV 54 percent of the votes went toward the bridge design and more than a quarter-million residents voted.

“The first day of fall is a great time to announce the covered bridge license plate is our winner,” said BMV Commissioner Kent Abernathy in a news release. “Not only is this colorful design with a red bridge spanning a creek the top vote getter, it won big.”

The second place plate was a silhouette of the Hoosier state, which received 39 percent of the vote, with the “Crossroads of America” design taking third place.

Intellectual Technology Inc., based in Fort Wayne, will designed the plates.

The covered bridge plate will begin appearing on vehicles in January of 2017 as older plates are replaced at the end of the normal seven-year life cycle. It will join “In God We Trust” as one of two, standard, no-extra-cost plates.

The new design can also be purchased before the end of the license plate life cycle for $10.25.
