Obama's Chicago

Think Barack Obama left Chicago when he headed to the White House?

Think again.

The commander in chief still commands a considerable presence here in the Midwest.

Take, for instance, the rumors swirling around police headquarters today that officer Mike Shields could be the top pick to permanently replace outgoing police superintendent Jody Weis. Sources tell NBCChicago that he'll earn the top cop job sometime after May.

Shields is a cousin of First Lady Michelle Obama.

Check this out: the man who reportedly plans to appoint him, Rahm Emanuel, well, he was Obama's chief of staff until he left the White House to become mayor of Chicago -- and sent Bill Daley, brother of current mayor, back.

Speaking of Emanuel, as he prepares for his inauguration as Mayor of Chicago this May, he enlisted another Obama team member to help him along the way: former social secretary Desiree Rogers joined the inaugural committee.

Meanwhile, David Axelrod, the messaging guru who helped land Obama in D.C. in the first place is back in town, working to get his boss reelected.
