An off-duty Chicago police officer fatally shot a man on the Near West Side Saturday morning in what is reportedly the third police-involved shooting overnight, police said.
The shooting took place around 6:45 a.m. in the 1800 block of West Monroe Street, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan.
According to a statement from Chicago Police, the off-duty officer was working a part-time job as a security guard at the Chicago Housing Authority building when he observed a female guard in a physical altercation with a male offender attempting to gain access to the property and shot at him.
The offender was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Sullivan said.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
The shooting is the third reported police-involved shooting since midnight and the fourth in the last 24 hours.
Earlier this morning, a police officer shot someone in the 6300 block of South King Drive.

Police said just before 2 a.m. officers observed a man firing shots at an unknown target and when they approached him, the man turned towards the officers with his weapon raised.
Officers fired at the man and struck him in the leg.
The man was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was placed into police custody.
No others were injured in the incident and the Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
The Chicago Tribune also reported that an officer shot at a man around 12:25 a.m. in the 5100 block of North Christiana Avenue, but Sullivan could not confirm that the officer fired his gun.
It happened at a home in the 7900 block of South Sacramento in the Ashburn neighborhood at about 9:40 a.m.
Police say the officer, identified as Latauska Horton, woke up after hearing noises on the first floor of her home.
When the officer went downstairs to investigate with her pistol in hand, she shot the male intruder after he lunged at her after ignoring orders to show his hands, according to Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden.
Last weekend, an off-duty officer fatally shot a burglar in the Old Town neighborhood.
The officer said he observed a burglary-in-progress around 11:40 p.m. in a vacant second-floor apartment in the 1900 block of North Lincoln Avenue, officials said.
The offender allegedly approached the officer with his hand in his waistband and refused to show his hands despite prompts from the officer and allegedly threatened the officer’s life, the statement said.
The man then produced a "shiny object" from his waistband and ran towards the officer, officials said.
The officer shot and killed the man, police said.
