Off-Duty Officer Shoots at Car Burglary Suspect

An off-duty Chicago police officer shot at a man attempting to break into a vehicle Thursday morning on the city’s Southwest Side.

The off-duty officer witnessed a 21-year-old man breaking into a vehicle just after midnight near West 65th Street and South Pulaski Road, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

The officer confronted the man, who then pointed a weapon at the officer, Greer said.

The officer then fired at the suspect but did not hit him, Greer said.

The suspect fled in his own vehicle and transported himself to Holy Cross Hospital with wounds from broken glass, officials said.

The man was taken into police custody and charges are pending, Greer said.
