1 in custody after officer fires at vehicle fleeing traffic stop: Chicago police

A person of interest was in custody late Sunday after a Chicago police officer fired at a vehicle attempting to flee a traffic stop on the city's Near North Side, police said.

At around 6:50 p.m., Chicago police officers attempted to pull a vehicle over near Division and Wells following a person with a gun call. The driver and passengers didn't follow officers' commands and fled, striking a police vehicle, according to a statement from Chicago police.

One officer fired toward the vehicle as it fled the scene, authorities said. A person of interest was placed into custody, and the vehicle was later found in the 100 block of West North Avenue, police stated.

NBC Chicago has yet to independently verify the account of events provided by Chicago police.

One officer was taken to an area hospital for observation, police said. No other injuries were reported.

The specifics of the incident were being investigated by Chicago's Civilian Office of Police Accountability. Per department policy, the officers involved will be place on administrative duty for a minimum of 30 days.
