According to police, the shooting took place in the 2300 block of Green Bay Road at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Police believe the shooting occurred after the suspect approached the victim, who was walking on the sidewalk and the two "engaged in a brief conversation." The gunman then opened fire and struck the teen, a 16-year-old boy from Highwood. He was taken to an area hospital and later pronounced dead.

Police initially said a suspect was observed fleeing the scene on a bicycle, dressed in all-black clothing. However, in an update Sunday evening, authorities said it was likely the suspect fled on foot following the shooting.
