Authorities in suburban Highland Park on Sunday were looking for the gunman who shot and killed a teenage boy in broad daylight.
According to police, the shooting took place in the 2300 block of Green Bay Road at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Police believe the shooting occurred after the suspect approached the victim, who was walking on the sidewalk and the two "engaged in a brief conversation." The gunman then opened fire and struck the teen, a 16-year-old boy from Highwood. He was taken to an area hospital and later pronounced dead.
Police initially said a suspect was observed fleeing the scene on a bicycle, dressed in all-black clothing. However, in an update Sunday evening, authorities said it was likely the suspect fled on foot following the shooting.
In the hours following the incident, authorities said there was no known threat to the community, as the shooting was believed to be targeted.
Highland Park police were investigating the shooting with the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
