“Person of Interest” Questioned in Shooting of Harvey Officer

Officer Robert Rolfe was shot Sunday evening while responding to a call of a robbery in progress

Officer Robert Rolfe was shot Sunday evening while responding to a call of a robbery in progress.

Officials in Harvey said police were questioning a male in connection with the shooting of a police officer.

"A person of interest is being questioned by investigators," read a statement released late Monday morning. "No further comment will be made until charges have been approved."

Officer Robert Rolfe, a six-year Harvey police veteran, was shot twice shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday
while responding to a call to a business at 159th and Wood streets in the far south suburb.

One person fired upon Rolfe and other officers as they arrived. Rolfe was struck twice.

"The officer received shots the moment he arrived, so the shots did not take place inside the store," said Harvey Police Chief Jason Banks.

Rolfe was transported in stable condition to Ingalls Hospital. He underwent surgery Monday afternoon to remove one of the two bullets that struck him and is said to be in good spirits.

When he awoke this morning, he was able to see his family and his colleagues. The mayor has been in touch with him. He is blessed ... he is lucky to be alive," city of Harvey spokesman Sean Howard said.

Also lifting Rolfe's spirits is a handwritten get-well card he received from a local six-year-old student named Colin Lewis (pictured, right).

Police are hoping surveillance video from at least two cameras will help them identify him and any other suspects in the attempted robbery.

The Harvey Police Department, Illinois State Police and Cook County Sheriffs, along with several other local law enforcement agencies, searched for the shooter through the night.

Harvey Mayor Eric Kellogg pledged and ordered the Harvey Police Department to "utilize all available resources to ensure that the suspect responsible is captured and brought to justice," according to police spokesperson Sandra Alvarado.

Rolfe and his wife of five years have a 5-month-old son.
