A federal super political action committee that has taken out TV ads tying Gov. Bruce Rauner to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is being backed by some powerful Democratic donors, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The super PAC, Leading Illinois for Tomorrow, has raised $5.7 million this month, according to the Tribune. That includes $2.5 million from Michael Sacks, a wealthy asset management CEO and Mayor Rahm Emanuel ally; $1 million from veteran Democratic donor Fred Eychaner; and $950,000 from Democratic contributor J.B. Pritzker and his Jabodon PT Co.
The LIFT super PAC, which is headed by Democratic state Sen. Daniel Biss, has also received more than $1 million from unions, the Tribune reports. Unions and their Democratic allies have fought Rauner over his pro-business, union-weakening “turnaround agenda.”
LIFT’s recent federal filing showed that the group spent $3.2 million in the first 20 days of October and had nearly $3 million available to spend, the Tribune reports. Much of the money the group spent went towards ads.
The group released a new ad Friday that, again, looks to tie Rauner to Trump. In the ad, actors portraying the Republicans strip the car of a stranded motorist.
“Donald Trump, Bruce Rauner and the Illinois Republicans promise to fix what’s broken,” the ad’s narrator says. “They say they’re here to help, but they’re really here to help themselves. They don’t think the wealthy should pay their fair share in taxes. They take away funding for schools, public safety, even child care.”
The narrator goes on to help the stranded driver and promises that “Democrats have a real plan that continues President Obama’s priorities.”
