Suburban Student Raises Cash to Help Others With Laundry Loads

A suburban Chicago honor student is spending spring break raising cash to help families in need pay for their laundry.

Jayera Griffin, an eighth-grader from Riverdale, tutors younger children in her hometown, she told NBC 5 Tuesday. She noticed some of them were embarrassed by their dirty clothes. When she asked her mother about it, she was told some families weren’t as fortunate to be able to wash their clothes regularly.

Jayera decided to help.

She raised nearly $1,000 in Riverdale and founded what she calls “Free Wash Day.” The money will go to families who need help paying to get their clothes cleaned at a local laundromat.

In addition to raising more cash to hand out new clothes, Jayera said she hopes to make “Free Wash Day” an annual event.
