Service is beginning to resume after a Metra train on the system's Rock Island line derailed Monday morning.
According to an 8:41 a.m. tweet from Metra, the derailment occurred on inbound train No. 704, traveling from Joliet to LaSalle Street Station in Chicago. Both inbound and outbound train traffic on the Rock Island line near the LaSalle Street Station has been halted as a result, Metra said.
"Extensive delays are anticipated," an alert posted to Metra's website said. A total of nine trains were canceled following the derailment.
According to Metra's website, Rock Island Train #426, scheduled to depart Joliet at 2:30 p.m., will operate and make all scheduled stops.
Outbound train movement had resumed just before 1 p.m. from LaSalle Street, according to officials.
In the meantime, the CTA will honor Metra tickets for both outbound and inbound passengers at 35th Street. It is unclear when that will end at this time.
