‘We Miss Her So Much': Funeral Held For Victim in Fatal Chicago Police Chase

Chequita Adams, an innocent bystander, was killed during a police chase in the city, and she was laid to rest on Thursday. Now, her family is searching for answers after her funeral. NBC 5’s Lisa Chavarria has more on their quest for justice.

Chereta Adams wants to know why she is laying her daughter to rest Thursday.

“I'm still looking for answers," she says.

It's been more than a week since 27-year-old Chequita Adams was hit and killed as an off-duty Chicago Police officer sped away from other officers. As the investigation into why this happened continues, the family agrees, the young woman they called Quita should still be alive.

“This shouldn't have happened. We shouldn't be here. I mean, you know, if, it just shouldn't have happened," said cousin Katrina Allen-Wardlow.

Family and friends packed into this Austin neighborhood funeral home.

“She brung the town out. They all came from Virginia and from Milwaukee," Chereta said.

Many wore Adams' favorite color, blue, as they said their goodbyes.

"We miss her so much. I miss her already," sister-in-law Nykea Murphy said.

So many are still in disbelief that the bubbly young woman who was always by her mother's side is gone.

Family members say there will always be a piece missing.

"Family reunions, family gatherings they will never be the same," Allen-Wardlow.

Chequita's mother is determined to get to the truth.

“I'm not going to let this go. You know we're going to get whatever needs to be done," she said.

The family of Chequita Adams has now laid her to rest.

They tell NBC 5 they will not stop until they have justice.
