Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Chicago-Area Counties

NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman says we’re in for a hot, humid day, and storms could develop this evening.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for counties in the Chicago area Sunday afternoon.

The warning from the National Weather Service is in effect for Cook and DuPage counties until 3 p.m.

Impacted cities include Chicago, Elgin, Cicero, Arlington Heights, Naperville, Wheaton, Evanston, Schaumburg, Skokie, Des Plaines, Berwyn, Mount Prospect and Wheaton.

Lollapalooza was temporarily evacuated around 2:40 p.m. due to approaching severe weather.

The storm carries a risk for wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour and hail the size of golf balls.

The chance for storms will increase as a cold front moves into the Chicago area Sunday evening. The storm will move through the Chicago area from the north and west and eventually arrive in Northwest Indiana.

The system is expected to move out of the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana by midnight, but showers may continue to pop up overnight.

The next chance for storms will be Wednesday and Thursday. The rest of the week is expected to stay dry.

Temperatures will dip throughout the week, with highs in the low to mid-80s Monday and Tuesday, followed by temperatures in the 70s through Friday.
