A South Side elementary school was locked down Thursday after an 18-year-old woman was shot one block away from the school.
Wacker Elementary School, in the 9700 block of South Morgan Street, was locked down around the time children were scheduled to be let out Thursday afternoon.
“It is the standard emergency plan whenever there is an occurrence in the vicinity of a school,” said Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Keiana Barrett.
Around 2:50 p.m., police said an 18-year-old woman was shot in the 1000 block of West 97th Street.
The woman was walking with a man when she said she heard several gunshots and felt pain, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.
The teen was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital with a wound to her right calf.
No one else was injured in the shootings.
Barrett said the school was locked down for around 10-15 minutes and no students were injured.
No one is in custody for the shooting, which did not happen on a CPS Safe Passage route.
